We are backing Rei Sakamoto at 4.30 on Betfair, at minimum stake. The 20-year-old qualifier has won five straight matches in New York, including one over Kei Nishikori and a five-set opener, so he is fully adjusted to these courts while Frances Tiafoe arrives from a 48-game five-setter that finished late at night with a single day off in between. We make the underdog a little more likely than the exchange does, though not by much, so this is a small position rather than a confident one.

We are backing Mananchaya Sawangkaew with a 4.5-game start at 1.98 on Betfair against Leylah Fernandez. Fernandez is ranked far higher but has had a rough hard-court season and has repeatedly lost to players around Sawangkaew's level this summer, while the Thai arrives four matches deep in the American swing and won her opening round in straight sets. At better than even money we do not need an upset, only for her to stay within four games.

We're backing Ka. Pliskova to beat Diana Shnaider at 4.08 with Pinnacle (4.20 on Betfair). Pliskova came through her opening match here in three sets, and her hard-court return numbers sit well above the WTA average, which is the part of her game most likely to trouble Shnaider's serve. At better than 4/1 the market is treating this as close to a formality, and we don't think it is.

We're backing Diane Parry to upset Sorana Cirstea at 3.50 on Pinnacle. Parry is in the form of her life: she won her maiden WTA title in Monterrey last week, beating Clara Tauson, Ann Li and Elise Mertens on the way, and then came through her US Open opener in straight sets. Cirstea is the bigger name and the fresher body, but she has played only two matches in the last month and her level has drifted all summer. The one real worry is Parry's workload - six matches in seven days, with back treatment during the Monterrey final - so we are staking this one small.

We are backing Jacob Fearnley to beat Tomas Etcheverry at 2.18 on Betfair. The market has made Etcheverry the favourite on ranking alone, but the two are level on hard-court form: Fearnley has climbed sharply over the last three months and has already won four matches at Flushing Meadows this fortnight, while Etcheverry has not beaten a player of his own standard in 90 days. The price looks built on Fearnley's five-set opener, and long matches move the odds far more than they move results. Staked small.

We are backing James Duckworth to beat Yibing Wu at 2.33 with Pinnacle. In the last eight days Duckworth has beaten Sonego, Navone, Marozsan and Arnaldi, priced as the underdog every single time, and he came through four sets in the first round here. The market has marked him down sharply for retiring mid-match in Winston-Salem last week, and we think that discount has gone a little too far. We are keeping the stake small, because he is 34 and this is best of five.
